Dear Garry,

In 1988 I sailed my 10.8m yacht to New Zealand and, when I reached Napier, I had the propeller removed to repair small damage. All the old TBT anti-fouling was polished off and, as TBT was no longer available, I asked a chandler what the locals used. He told me that they used lanolin and, somewhat doubtfully, I bought a small tube of it. It was a firm cream, sort of yellowish grey colour and it smelt of sheep.

To apply it I was told to pour hot water over the prop to make it easy to spread. This I did and applied a thin film over the prop and prop shaft. From then until I sold the boat in 1997, I NEVER HAD ANOTHER BARNACLE ON THE PROP OR THE PROP SHAFT. I could not believe how good this lanolin was.

I was always tempted to try a test patch on the hull to see if it was as good at keeping barnacles off the hull as it was on the prop, but I was loath to use up the little lanolin that I had. But, if the lanolin stuck to a fast moving prop, how much better would it stick to the slower moving hull. I think it would be well worth a try, and it would be a whole lot easier, and cheaper, than antifouling paint. And better on the marine environment.

If I return to boating, I would have no hesitation in using lanolin on the exposed metals, and I would certainly try it out on the hull.

Yours sincerely,

P.A.E.Smith.

P.S.Thank you for the products and the information. I did not include my thanks in the main letter, in case it looked as though you had bribed me to write. You can cut this bit off if you like.
